Urban transport interchanges are central to any debate about the future of our cities, however, they currently represent a great missed design opportunity. In partnership with the leading architectural practice Scott Browning and the Helen Hamlyn Centre, architecture graduate Fiona Scott embarked on a design research study to provide some fresh thinking about this important urban issue.
A number of existing interchanges in London and the south-east of England were studied in order to identify key underlying challenges. Based upon this research, six new urban elements were proposed which could reinvigorate the design of the interchange. A vital feature of these strategies was the reconnection of the transport interchange with the surrounding urban fabric. The aim is to enhance their social and commercial potential, while developing more imaginative uses of land, media and urban design.
