This report describes the research and development of a new pedal-powered tricycle for children that can be quickly adapted to the needs of those without lower body strength. In partnership with the children’s charity Whizz-Kidz and the Helen Hamlyn Centre, Design Products’ graduate Ben Wilson took the view that young people with limited mobility deserve pedal vehicles with the same level of design innovation and ‘street credibility’ as everyone else.
Starting with a bespoke tricycle for a young disabled user, the project developed a design geared to the demands of multiple production. The final outcome of the project was two tricycles, one in aluminium, the other in stainless steel, which are modular in design, advanced in bicycle technology and contemporary in style.
