Design for our Future Selves awards 2008

This is the ninth year of this mentored inclusive design programme. This year there are 25 finalists from ten different RCA art and design departments. This annual awards scheme aims to encourage second year RCA students to engage particular ‘users’ while they design and develop designs that can improve people’s lives. All the projects respond to one design brief:

'Develop an architecture, design or communication project that addresses a social issue or engages with a particular social group or engages with a particular social group in order to improve independence, mobility, health, working life or sustainable community development.'

During the ten-month development period, shortlisted students were lead through a three-stage process to experience and explore how to design inclusively:

  1. Define the social issues (application period: October - December 2007)
  2. Develop ideas with users and other experts (January – March 2008)
  3. Deliver creative design outcomes (presentation period, April – June)

This year there are two new awards with two new partners. The first award, responding to design discourse about sustainability, is for Sustainable Community and sponsored by GMW Architects. The second award is for Inclusive Design Process and sponsored by creative design consultancy Factorydesign. There are eitht awards in total:
