Helen Hamlyn Professor of Design
The decision taken this summer by the Helen Hamlyn Trust to fund a Helen Hamlyn Chair of Design at the RCA follows the landmark decision to write the Helen Hamlyn Centre into the College’s constitution ‘in perpetuity’.
The task of the new Helen Hamlyn Professor of Design will be to advance ‘design that improves quality of life’. In this context, there will be a growing focus on design for essential public services such as healthcare and patient safety and on networking internationally to stay abreast of the best new thinking in the field.
Jeremy Myerson, the first Helen Hamlyn Professor of Design at the RCA, has assumed the role of Principal Investigator on the DOME (Designing Out Medical Error) research project funded by the EPSRC. He also gave guest lectures in the USA in 2008 at the Build Boston conference (20 November) and at the RSA in New York (21 November) as part of his new ambassadorial role.
