The Forum on the Future of Surgery is supported by medical company DePuy Johnson & Johnson, organised by Helen Hamlyn Senior Associate Maja Kecman and facilitated by Microsoft's Phillip Joe, who is currently on secondment to the NHS.
The theme of the second Forum on 12 June 2009 was the 'patient journey'. Workshop sessions were prefaced by presentations by design strategist Professor Peter Buckle, clinician Mr Henry A Lee and patient Barrie Mintz.
At the inaugural meeting of the Forum on the Future of Surgery on 6 February 2009, consultant orthopaedic surgeon Professor David Barrett and James Barlow, Professor of Technology and Innovation Management at Imperial College London, gave short provocations before delegates worked in breakout groups to explore different aspects of surgical practice, including location for surgery, barriers to change, new materials and technologies, and the patient experience.

Two further meetings of the Forum on the Future of Surgery are planned for 2010.
