Group of students reading project brief

Methods Lab at the RCA
Thirty-three students from ten RCA programmes and four students from the Media Studies at the Media, Art & Design Faculty (MAD) in Genk, Belgium attended the workshop, 'Ageing in Kensington: designing for our future selves'. They worked together in four teams for four days and explored how to provoke active participation through design.

The Methods Lab was one of a series of interdisciplinary collaboration projects run by AcrossRCA from 31 October to 3 November 2012.

The participating students worked together with invited creative partners, who were older local residents from Age UK, Kensington & Chelsea and London's University of Third Age (U3A) a design professor who grew up in Kensington and a design tutor from Media, Art & Design Faculty in Belgium who is pregnant.

In the four-day period, students were inspired by conversations with their creative partners. The teams were encouraged to engage with local communities through creative design processes.

This led to exciting new design ideas that were developed and tested at events the teams organised. At the end of the Methods Lab the four teams each gave a six-minute presentation of their project.
