Helen Hamlyn Design Awards 2012
The Helen Hamlyn Design Awards provide a platform for graduating students across all design disciplines of the Royal College of Art to create projects that can improve people's lives.

Five awards are given annually in relation to the themes of the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design's three research labs: Age & Ability; Health & Patient Safey and Work & City. Entrants are nominated by Royal College of Art professors and heads of programme. This year there are four main award sponsors: AgeUK, Clearblue, GMW Architects and the Technology Strategy Board. In addition Helen Hamlyn will give a personal award for creativity.

As part of the awards presentation, there was a special Helen Hamlyn Alumni Award given to a former Helen Hamlyn Research Associate who has made an outstanding professional contribution to inclusive design.

There were also two further special features:

  • The results of a collaborative student project with Research In Motion, maker of the Blackberry, on the theme of design for ageing will be showcased.
  • A publication on sensory design for autism by Andrew Brand and Katie Gaudion, a former winner of the Helen Hamlyn Award for Creativity, will be formally launched in partnership with The Kingwood Trust
