An investigation into expectations, roles and services within the pharmacy environment. Proposing ways to evolve the relationship between the pharmacy and customer.
King J (2007) Potential Pharmacies, London, Helen Hamlyn Centre
In the traditional shop-counter pharmacy, medicine and advice are dispensed in a clinical, static and often impersonal environment. But with the centralisation of medical data and a rise in patient aspiration, alternative medicine and online prescription and diagnosis, a paradigm shift in how pharmacies work is underway.
This project visualised the future within this context. Through the use of drawing as well as talking, interviews with several pharmacy users helped to identify the sources of their current dissatisfaction and reveal fresh opportunities for the pharmacy. Building on these insights, this project proposed five potential types of pharmacy, each illustrating a different model of interaction between the patient and pharmacist. They are: the Open Pharmacy, Life Pharmacy, ProScribe Pharmacy, Self-Health Pharmacy and Coffee+Pharmacy.
No single one of these ideas is proposed as the definitive future of the pharmacy, but rather they are presented together as a set of directions, a framework through which to view the issues that are shaping the future of the pharmacy.
