Harry Dobbs set up 'light . urban . landscape', a consultancy for strategic street-scape design in April 2003.
Following research at HHRC/RCA into a strategic approach to urban lighting, The London Borough of Camden initiated a street lighting pilot project, in partnership with Harry and the Royal College of Art. The aim of the partnership has been to directly incorporate the research knowledge into the borough's approach to street-scape design. The design of lighting, street furniture and the street-scape is being approached as a means of addressing our perceptions of safety on the borough's streets and enhancing street identities and associations.
Lighting approaches of a larger urban scale, generated during the research, are also being worked on. A project developed for a client in Greece proposes to transform an existing building's 20m by 50m brille soliel into a dynamic media display glowing with information at night. Film, pictures and information can be played across the buildings facades, turning it into a 'digital landmark' for the city of Athens and the 2004 Olympics.
