Billions of cartons are produced for packaging liquids but they have they are often difficult to open. Factory Design decided to change this longstanding status quo and make the standard pint milk carton easy to open basing their solution on the standard footprint for the pack and using machinery and technology familiar to the manufacturing industry.
With the help of the users with severe arthritis, the design team devised an inclusive solution for milk packaging. Although it proved difficult to convince packaging manufacturers to take up the new design concept, Factory Design learned from the inclusive design process and developed their vision of and expertise in inclusive design. Their later design of a saucepan became a winner of a UK Inclusive Design Challenge in 2003.
