work at home

Date: 20 April 1999
Royal College of Art, London

The first thinktank of the Helen Hamlyn Research Centre addressed the design implications of one of the key social trends of the age: the rise of working from home.

Work at Home brought together a broad cross-section of interested parties to explore the underlying issues and develop an agenda for practice-based design research.

In total, 120 people attended, including designers and architects, furniture and lighting manufacturers, IT service providers, retailers, and representatives from disability groups, homeworking associations and the media, as well as RCA staff and students.

Moving On

The thinktank was sponsored by Leonard Cheshire, the charity provider of care and support for disabled people, and its aim was to be inclusive in terms of age, ability and income.

The morning was devoted to 'expert' presentations on a range of themes; the afternoon to working in four smaller workshop groups to 'brainstorm' the design agenda. At the thinktank's core was an observational research study of home workers, entitled 'Borders'.

The proceedings of the Work at Home thinktank have been recorded in an illustrated publication from the Centre, available for download in Adobe pdf format, or in hard copy from the centre. To order your copy, price £10, contact us.
