New patron for DBA Inclusive Design Challenge

Michael Wolff has taken on the role of Patron for the DBA Inclusive Design Challenge. Michael is a champion of design and innovation and the perfect advocate for the Challenge, which promotes innovation through inclusive design and is a collaboration between the DBA and the Helen Hamlyn Research Centre. Ergonomics Society Lecture

Helen Hamlyn Research Centre Co-director Professor Roger Coleman gave the 2006 Ergonomics Society Annual Lecture in Cambridge on 5 April. Entitled 'Margins to Mainstream: why Inclusive Design is Better Design' it describes how far inclusive design has come since the first collaboration between the Ergonomics Society and the Royal College of Art in 1992. Information Design for Patient Safety

The Helen Hamlyn Research Centre and the National Patient Safety Agency have jointly published 'Information Design for Patient Safety', a guidance document for packaging designers and the pharmaceutical industry. The book is based on the work of Research Associate Thea Swayne, and identifies 25 key information and graphic design issues that can impact on patient safety. More information and download...

DBA Design Challenge winner announced

The sixth DBA Inclusive Design Challenge was won by Wire Design for Consider™, an innovative software tool to help graphic designers and their clients understand the impact of common visual impairments. Elaine Ostroff honoured

The HHRC congratulates Elaine Ostroff, co founder of Adaptive Environments, who has been awarded an Honorary Membership by the American Institute of Architects (AIA). It is one of the highest honours that the AIA can give a person outside the architectural profession. More...

Research Associates show and symposium

The Helen Hamlyn Reseach Associates 2005 presented their industry projects at a special symposium at the RCA in October. Their work formed the centrepiece of the Innovation at the RCA exhibition which was part of the London Design Festival.

Design for patient safety commended

The Centre's Professor Roger Coleman and John Bound were part of a team awarded the President's Medal of the Ergonomics Society. Magdalen Galley, President of the Ergonomics Society commented: 'this was an exceptional study which was why the Society decided to make the award after a gap of four years'. Research, Conferences and Exhibitions

Roger Coleman and HHRC alumni Rob Brown and Guy Robinson of Sprout Design are working on a DTI-funded survey of inclusive design awareness in UK industry; work of the HHRC was featured in a major inclusive design exhibition in Seoul, Korea in November/December 2004, and presented at the Designing for the 21st Century conference in Rio de Janeiro in December 2004.

Design for our Future Selves awards 2005

The winners of the annual Design for our Future Selves awards were announced on 28 June as part of Innovation Night at the Royal College of Art. Twenty five finalists, selected from a shortlist of 57, were competing for eight separate awards offering a total of £8,000 in prize money. More...

Pearson Matthews wins DBA Design Challenge

Pearson Matthews' radical new take on the humble sticking plaster won the Inclusive Design Award at the fifth DBA Design Challenge on 23 February. The small team at Lacock Gullam were also commended for their spatial and technological reconfiguration of the bus shelter. More...

InnovationRCA launched

The Helen Hamlyn Research Centre forms an integral part of the new Royal College of Art innovation network for RCA graduates and business - InnovationRCA - which was officially launched to the media on 23 February 2005.

New standard in inclusive design

A new British Standard in managing inclusive design has been published. Research Centre co-director Professor Roger Coleman worked closely with the panel that drafted BS 7000-6, part of the BS 7000 series of standards for design management. Download PDF (12KB)

Inclusive design resources online

A new resource for design and education was launched at the RSA on 30 June 2004 along with the announcement of the winners of the RSA Inclusive Worlds student design competition. The centre is also collaborating with the Design Council to develop online inclusive design resources for education and business and design professionals.
