The Millennium Ashes

Designer: Jennifer Brown

Department: Architecture and Interiors

Joint second prize in the Mobility category

This project proposes a new inclusive masterplan on a Docklands site in East London, where divisions in territory have formed between business, white and immigrant populations. It is based on reintegrating a small isolated group of 15 Bangladeshi adults with learning disabilities back into the local community. At the core of the strategy is the game of cricket, which is played by a cross-section of communities and becomes a tool for learning, socialising and staging events. The design shifts from the formal to the informal, between sports landscapes, new homes and stretching existing facilities, in a bid to capture the imagination and increase the mobility of the Bangladeshi group.
