Helen Hamlyn Award
A special award for creativity across all categories made personally by Helen Hamlyn, whose Foundation endowed the Helen Hamlyn Research Centre. The Helen Hamlyn Foundation was established in 1985 to promote better products and a better environment for older people. Today the Foundation's interests have broadened to encompass inclusive design - practical initiatives aimed at improving quality of life for people of all ages and abilities, in collaboration with industry and the voluntary sector.

Lucy Porter / Industrial Design Engineering An innovative product transforming the patient experience of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans within the technical constraints of the scan room. Severe claustrophobia and such anxieties as having to remain still are reduced by distracting visual stimuli. The patient watches a projected image on a screen that appears to be a long way above their head. Discomfort from loud machine noise is reduced through better ear protection.
Helen Hamlyn commented: 'A project that makes a discernable improvement to quality of life. The work demonstrates how design can positively impact in the medical field.'
