Researchers at Chinese conference

Three centre researchers, Julia Cassim, Yan-Ki Lee and Jo-Anne Bichard, attended the 12th International Conference on Human Computer Interaction (HCI) in Beijing, the prestigious biennial conference.

The trio presented papers that not only discussed their individual research but showcased flagship Helen Hamlyn Centre activities, including the DBA Inclusive Design Challenge, Design For Our Future Selves Awards and the i~design project.

Time in Beijing also gave the trio the opportunity to meet their counterparts in the design and social science schools at Tsinghua University. Meetings were held with Professor Cai Jun, Head of the Industrial Design Department, Professor Jikun Liu, Director of the design schools’ User Experience Lab and Professor Pei Xiaomei of the Gerontology Centre at the Department of Sociology. These meetings provided a useful exchange on approaches in human-centred design.

The Chinese trip was followed with a visit to Hong Kong to discuss setting up a Challenge Workshop to mark the 60th anniversary of the British Council in Hong Kong. This has now been confirmed for 2008 and will involve Hong Kong Polytechnic University as well as other partners from Shanghai, Beijing and the East Asia region.
